curate – lili fourmestraux

after task 1 and task 2, i felt like i’d talked enough about my life and childhood. which is why i decided to work on something rather different for this week. i crafted and curated the leaflet of a virtual exhibition, and associated my 26 objects with fictional testimonies, from other voices than mine.

the full pdf is accessible here. research/process is here

(the weird background texture is non-intentional, it’s a myblog mischief)

said leaflet is a 9-page foldable publication, with a poster on the back. i wish i could include a video of me manipulating it, but i don’t have a printer!! you’ll have to figure out how it works (clues in my process/research)

Curate-proposals jessica

My idea is to make comparisons which in terms of the relation between different categories. I have two proposals so far which are: Huge &Tiny, Isolated & social.

For ‘huge and tiny’, I proposed 13 normal real daily supplies and 13 tiny model toy collections. And I planned to indicate the difference between two groups through four aspects: size compare, material, pros&cons and meaning to me.

For the Isolated & social proposal, I also have 13 things I usually use when I am isolated at home and 13 things people always need when they are together. Then I will explore more from LATCH aspect especially from time, location and hierarchy.

PUTHIMART//What If Carravagio was a Straw Lemur?: 12 ways to translate 3 continentally diverse objects

My 3 objects were influenced by week 1’s feedback that mentioned making it have a international theme, especially in times where you are stuck at home. I decided to split the objects continentally and pick the one i felt I was most suited with. The 12 translations include stuff mentioned on the brief along with my own ideas as well including making it into a meme or exercise move.

The 12 translation processes done to each object includes: Biological Classification, Weight and size, Colour pallet fabrication, an ‘anatomy’ diagram, speculating how its been produced, multi angle photography, story writing, meme making, Making it an exercise move, A low cost cosplay, alternative uses and making it into “art”

Here is my process log for week 2, it might help with the outcome’s context if you read it first.

In terms of presenting the outcome, I wanted to show it as something that worked seperately and as a big image, being influenced by Alchemy and Ancient Egyptian illustrations, and so I decided to use a Concertina fold on a piece of A3 paper, splitting it up into 12 divisions. One for each “translation”. . I’ve found that my ideas develop as I work on my outcome so I will link them in chronological order.

Week 02/ Catalogue/ I&S/ Maria Lukoianova

From the 26 objects I have chosen before I was mostly interested in small things for some reason, so I did not have a hard time deciding. However, I think I should’ve taken more time on finding different ways of translation of the chosen objects, but animating the objects for me was definitely fun!

Memory catalogue

Process

Originally I had the idea of producing an interactive catalogue.

This consisted of 3 types of the same object (in my case 3 hand sanitizers, one for each family member) and comparing their qualities or ‘translations’ against each other. I wanted to create an interactive catalogue in the form of a personal user interface, letting my audience choose between the different sizes, scents, colours, costs etc. This would have been a suitable format because it would let my audience compare between the objects, letting them find their most suitable match.

As you can see by the length of my thumbnail sketches below, ultimately comparing 12 separate categories across 3 different objects in a simple user-friendly way was confusing both functionally and visually. I had a creative block on this idea and ended up having to move onto producing a more simple catalogue last minute.

My new catalogue focuses on the memories of the objects and the narratives behind the people in my family who gifted me those objects:
